Atrium Health doctor receives 2023 Research Award

MACON, Georgia (KBTV) -Hard work is not going unnoticed for a local doctor.

Dr. Dennis Ashley, trauma medical director for Atrium Health Navicent, was presented with the 2023 Established Investigator in Clinical/Population Science award at the 2023 Research Awards Day Program on Nov. 8 at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Wake Forest University School of Medicine Research Awards have been awarded to peer-nominated investigators exhibiting the most outstanding research contributions within 14 unique categories since 1997. Ashley has made major contributions to the research environment through mentoring, scientific leadership, collaboration and service to both the academic and scientific community. He has established an important research program as well.

Ashley serves as the Will C. Sealy Endowed Chair and Professor of Surgery for Mercer University School of Medicine. In addition to his work as trauma medical director and professor of surgery, Ashley has served as chair of the Georgia Trauma Commission (GTC) since its inception in 2007, leading the development of Georgia’s trauma system. During his time with GTC, Ashley led the charge to secure sustainable funding for trauma care. Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center is central and south Georgia’s only American College of Surgeons verified adult Level I trauma center and one of only five adult Level I trauma centers in Georgia. Earlier this year, Ashley received The Trauma Center Association of America’s annual Award of Distinction for Outstanding Leadership.

“Dr. Ashley is a resource not just for Atrium Health Navicent’s patients, but for all of the students and residents he encounters as a professor for Mercer University’s School of Medicine. He’s known in the medical community for his research and skilled clinical work, and has made countless contributions to trauma programs across the state,” saidAtrium Health Navicent Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrice Walker.

Ashley received The Trauma Center Association of America’s annual Award of Distinction for
Outstanding Leadership earlier this year.
