FVSU President Paul A. Jones Announces Retirement After Decade of Leadership

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (KBTV) — Fort Valley State University President Dr. Paul A. Jones announced he will retire at the end of June 2026, wrapping up 10 years as the school’s 10th president and more than 24 years of service in the University System of Georgia.

Jones made the announcement following FVSU’s 130th anniversary celebration, calling the decision a “thoughtful and prayerful” one. “Serving as president of Fort Valley State University has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life,” Jones said, adding that his goal has always been to strengthen the institution and position it to thrive long after his tenure.

During his presidency, Fort Valley State saw its largest enrollment since 2013, improved retention and graduation rates, and continued national recognition. The university has been ranked the No. 1 public HBCU in Georgia for eight straight years and the No. 1 regional university in Georgia for social mobility by U.S. News & World Report.

University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue praised Jones’ leadership, saying he leaves behind a lasting legacy of expanded academic programs, stronger philanthropy, and a reinforced mission as Georgia’s only 1890 land-grant institution.

Jones will remain in his role through June 2026 to ensure a smooth leadership transition. The University System of Georgia says details about the presidential search will be announced at a later date.
