MACON, Georgia. (KBTV) – March marks National Nutrition Month, a time dedicated to building healthy eating habits and making informed food choices.

KBTV’s Dr. Karlisha Booze spoke with Nicole Battles, Clinical Nutrition Manager of Piedmont Macon, about practical ways people can reduce the amount of sodium in their daily diets.

Battles says many Americans consume far more sodium than recommended, often without realizing it. She advises viewers to start by reading nutrition labels carefully, choosing low-sodium or no-salt-added products, and limiting highly processed foods.

“It’s just so important to remember that excess sodium in the diet can attack kidneys and the heart and put us at a much higher risk of stroke,” Battles explained during the interview.

She also recommends cooking more meals at home, using fresh herbs and spices instead of salt for flavor, and being mindful of hidden sodium in restaurant and packaged foods.

Viewers can get more information about a healthy diet and avoiding sodium by going to piedmont.org and searching “sodium.”
