FORT VALLEY, Georgia (KBTV)- Voting is a civic duty and Fort Valley State University is making sure its students’ voices are being heard at the polls.
Fort Valley State University is pushing students to the food trucks and the polls. The Political Science Student Association and the Women’s Learning Community have partnered to get students informed and to the polls. Students were able to get a ride to polling locations on a van at the Thursday’s event. Students learned how to register to vote, why voting matters, and who’s running.
Students had to text “WE MATTER” to 25225, and got a message about voting that they had to forward to five people. The message included a link for students to check their voting status and register to vote if they needed to. Deputy National Field Director for Black Voters Matter, Fenika Miller, has been a driving force in getting students to vote. She says, “It’s the black youth renaissance tour. Black students ages 18-29 are outpacing voters in all age demographics, except those who are 65 and up.”
With rights being taken away, this midterm election is going to change the direction for the state of Georgia. “We know that if we close the student voting gap by 10%-15% , there’s nothing we can’t do. We can change the political trajectory of this state and make a better future for all of us, Miller adds.
More than ever scholars are racing to the voting booths to help bring their vision to light. Student representative, Melchezedek Green says, “Due to the overturning of Roe vs Wade and the laws we’re losing day by day, it’s very important for us to vote.”
Early voting in Georgia ends on November 4th. Make sure you exercise your right to vote! For more information about voting in Georgia, visit Georgia.gov
