Wellness Wednesday: National Breastfeeding Awareness Month

MACON, Georgia (KBTV) – August marks National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating families about the benefits of breastfeeding and the resources available to help new mothers succeed.

KBTV’s Dr. Karlisha Booze spoke with Kaitlin Johnson, a lactation counselor at Piedmont Macon, about the benefits breastfeeding can provide for both mothers and babies. During the interview, Johnson also discussed some of the common challenges mothers may experience, including difficulties with latching.

Johnson emphasized that mothers do not have to navigate those challenges alone. She shared how lactation counselors work closely with families to provide education, encouragement, and personalized support throughout their breastfeeding journey.

The conversation also highlights the specialized care available for mothers whose babies are receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Johnson explains how lactation support helps NICU mothers establish and maintain milk production while meeting the unique needs of premature or medically fragile infants.

National Breastfeeding Awareness Month serves as a reminder that every family’s feeding journey is different, and access to education, resources, and compassionate support can make a meaningful difference.
